Classic between Ajax and Feyenoord escalates: game abandoned and riots

New negative headlines about Mislintat

The Dutch classic between Ajax Amsterdam and Feyenoord Rotterdam was canceled on Sunday due to the repeated setting off of pyrotechnics. The referee ended the game in accordance with league rules with the score 3-0 for champions Feyenoord after fans fired flares onto the field for the second time. The game, in which no visiting fans were present, could now be counted against Ajax or could be played to the end on a neutral pitch within a few days behind closed doors.

Santiago Gimenez (9th/18th minute) and Igor Paixão (37th) had confidently shot Feyenoord into the lead in De Klassieker and exacerbated the crisis of Ajax, who had had a weak start to the season. The first interruption occurred in the 44th minute after two flares landed in the penalty area of German Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther. After a break, the game continued according to the rules before three pyro-rockets landed in the same penalty area in the 55th minute, in which this time Ajax keeper Jay Gorter was standing.

The game ended automatically. Mayor Femke Halsema and the police could have overruled this decision if they had identified a threat to public safety. However, since there were officially no Feyenoord supporters in the stadium, this was apparently not the case. However, there were massive riots after the demolition. Show videos, as Ajax supporters break into the main entrance of the Johan Cruijff Arena. There were also clashes with the police around the stadium, during which tear gas was used.

Ajax coach Steijn about to be kicked out? New negative headlines about Mislintat

Ajax still can’t calm down. For days, the club has been in the headlines mainly because of technical director Sven Mislintat, who was initially blamed for the poor start to the season due to his transfers in the previous change period, before the signing of ex-Stuttgart native Borna Sosa came into focus. There are allegations of a conflict of interest and possible violations of the corporate governance declaration of the listed Ajax. The background is Mislintat’s participation in the football data analysis company “Matchmetrics”. The consulting agency “AKA Global”, which handled Sosa’s move from VfB to Ajax, has also been involved in this company since the summer. An internal investigation has been initiated (to the news).

There were again negative reports before the game against Feyenoord. According to various sources close to Ajax, Mislintat stormed into the coaching cabin and other offices on Saturday. As “De Telegraaf” reported, the 50-year-old wanted to increase the pressure on coach Maurice Steijn, who was threatened with possible dismissal in the event of a defeat. The approach further increased the employees’ anger towards Mislintat. Steijn is said not to have been present at the time.

It has long been known that things are not going well between Steijn and Mislintat. The coach suggested several players during the transfer period who were always ignored by the ex-Stuttgart player, it is said. The two are said not to have spoken to each other during the international break. The Amsterdam team only got five points from four games.
