After taking bronze at the World Championships, the German mixed relay team also made it to the podium at the European Cycling Championships in Drenthe, Netherlands.
After 38.6 kilometers on the course in Emmen, the German sextet took third place behind winners France and Italy. This was the fourth time that the German selection achieved a medal in the fourth edition of the young competition.
Miguel Heidemann, Jannik Steimle and Max Walscheid laid the foundation for a successful race with the third-best time on the first lap. Lisa Klein, Franziska Koch and Mieke Kröger then saved the medal with a lead of 1.45 seconds over hosts Netherlands. “We performed well. It was an ideal course for me. I like flat courses like this,” said Walscheid.
German junior relay takes silver
The German junior relay team had previously won silver in the mixed doubles. There would even have been gold if the German juniors hadn’t fallen twice. Italy ultimately won the title. Overall, it was the fourth German precious metal in the title fights in the Netherlands. On Wednesday, world champion Antonia Niedermaier won silver in the U23 class and bronze for Hannah Kunz among the juniors in the individual time trials.
The road races will take place in the title fights from Friday. The women’s elite race takes place on Saturday, followed a day later by the men with John Degenkolb on the team.
