Man who killed 4 people in traffic accident is in custody again

Omar E., the 28-year-old man from Roosendaal who caused an accident in Oud Gastel last year that resulted in four fatalities, is in custody again. At the beginning of last month he was arrested after drugs and a lot of cash were found during a police operation. Shortly afterwards he was released because the court saw insufficient reason to detain him. The court in Den Bosch saw this differently on Thursday. E. must go to jail for at least 90 days.

In the accident last September, Omar E. rammed a crossing Toyota with a Mercedes rented in Germany. The enormous blow killed two mothers and two young children from Bosschenhoofd. A girl survived the crash. Earlier this year, the court decided that E. could await his trial at home after six months of pre-trial detention. At least if he adhered to strict conditions.

At the beginning of August things went wrong again. During a major police operation at his house on Reginadonk, 13 kilos of soft drugs and 45,000 euros in cash were found. However, the court decided not to extend his pre-trial detention after two weeks, resulting in E. being released again.

“You really have to have solid reasons to detain someone,” a court spokesperson said at the time. “For example, if it concerns a serious offense, such as manslaughter. Or there must be a risk of recurrence. That is not the case in this case.”

The Public Prosecution Service already announced at that time that it would appeal. Now the court has ruled that the Roosendaler must indeed go back to prison.
