Ice hockey: Wolfsburg extends with leadership duo

Shortly before the start of the season in the German Ice Hockey League (DEL), the Grizzlys Wolfsburg set important course for the future.

The Lower Saxony team extended the contracts with managing director Karl-Heinz Fliegauf and coach Mike Stewart until 2026. The four-time runner-up announced this two days before their opening game on Friday (7:30 p.m./MagentaSport) against the Augsburg Panthers.

Former professional Fliegauf has been working in Wolfsburg since 2007 and not only made the Grizzlys an integral part of the DEL, but also led the team to the finals in 2011, 2016, 2017 and 2021. Two years ago he hired Stewart as head coach. The Austro-Canadian, who had previously worked in Bremerhaven, Augsburg and Cologne, made it to the DEL semi-finals twice.

“I also see the long-term contract extension with Mike as a strong signal for our sporting orientation,” said Fliegauf: “We want to offer our fans attractive sport.”
