Almost 1,000 first-year students were welcomed to the TH Lübeck

The welcoming speakers began with Pastor Jochen Schultz, member of the board of trustees St. Peter, with an entertaining discussion about faith, doubt and confidence. “During your studies you will experience that there are unexplorable things,” says Schultz. “You will understand, measure and calculate a lot of things scientifically… and yet you will find that something remains unavailable.” That is good, because the students themselves are always good for surprises: “Nobody knows what experiences he or she will have tomorrow will do.”

Living democracy

Muriel Helbig, President of TH Lübeck, gave the students two recommendations for experiences: “Plan one in good time stay abroad! We support you. I know many who regret not trying. Ask specifically!” She recommended participation in a university committee as the second important experience. “We are a tax-financed, autonomous institution based on freedom of teaching and research that is self-governing. We employ 5,400 people, 5,100 of whom are students. You can have your say! We are a living democracy; As president, I am responsible for day-to-day business, but the right to vote lies with the so-called status groups: professors, employees and students. Everyone can participate here. Have your say!”

Freshers’ couch

This was confirmed by Mathis Mohnke from Student Parliament (StuPa) and Natalie Reinhold from General Student Committee (AStA). They also advertised their “Ersti-Couch” project: “There are still a lot of students looking for a room,” they say. “Every place to sleep helps.”

Networking

Professor Jochen Abke, Vice President of the TH Lübeck for Studies and Digitalization, provided the surprise element of the morning. “Today is the first day of your studies,” he said. His tips: “Be curious. Get involved. And above all: develop team spirit! Who doesn’t know anyone yet?” A surprising number of fingers went up. The subsequent networking in front of the church came at just the right time.
