After Morocco was hit by a major earthquake last Friday evening, which has already left almost 2,500 dead and 2,500 injured, the Turkish federation Milli Görüş immediately took action to raise money. “It is close to our hearts what is happening in Morocco.”
The Turkish federation Milli Görüş has started a fundraising campaign for the victims and relatives in Morocco after the major earthquake last Friday. “We are concerned about what is happening in Morocco. Of course, we experienced the same thing six months ago,” says President Mustafa Hamurcu of the Milli Görüş Federation. He is referring to the earthquake in Turkey in February this year.
Milli Görüş is an Islamic association and has 50 affiliated organizations in the Netherlands, half of which are mosques. In North Holland, these are located in Amsterdam, Hoofddorp, Heemstede, Zaandam, Haarlem and Hilversum.
As chairman, Hamurcu was immediately called on Friday. To help, but also to share experiences. “Many people would like to help, and everyone has good intentions, but there are always ‘pirates’ who stand in the way of effective assistance. For example, we recommend that there be one central point in terms of e-mail and telephone.”

Raise money through Tikkie
Hamurcu also explains that in a disaster like this, people sometimes think that there is a need for something, while that is not the case. “That’s a shame. We collected a lot of clothing for Turkey at the time, truckloads of it, while there was plenty of clothing there. The most effective thing is to raise money and see there, in Morocco, how that money can best be spent.”
According to Hamurcu, what is currently needed in Morocco is shelter, temporary accommodation and medical supplies. Hamarcu says that nothing physical is happening at their mosques in North Holland at the moment. “Milli Görüş is raising money through Tikkies. The counter is already at tens of thousands of euros.”
There are also additional prayer services from the religious side. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Morocco. It is terrible what they are experiencing.”
