Sorry if I exist!: the plot
Serena (Paola Cortellesi) graduated brilliantly in architecture. After a fruitful experience at Londondecide to return to Italy because he misses his land. And here the troubles begin. Her arrival reminds her how much in her country they dominate the precariousness of work, discrimination, clientelism, male chauvinism. In fact, she has to struggle with jobs well below her skills: she is a decorator at the Bedroom paradisedesigner of funeral chapels for rich peasants and waitress in a luxury restaurant.
Dissatisfied with her work, the woman intercepts a tender from neighborhood redevelopment on the outskirts of Rome, the Corvial. Meanwhile Serena forms a friendship with Francis (a Raul Bova notable), the owner of the restaurant. She discovers that he is separated and has a son and slowly she falls in love with him. Until he confesses he’s gay. She doesn’t take it well at first, then, to avoid eviction, she accepts the invitation to move in with him. Meanwhile, the redevelopment project passes the exam, but it is not Serena Bruno who signs it, but Bruno Serena. How will he work on it?
Sorry if I exist!: a comedy about Italian vices
Sorry if I exist is a comedy denouncing the vices of our country, from discrimination, to the lack of attention to the suburbs of our cities, to the precariousness. But above all he focuses on the condition of women, who still have a long way to go to achieve complete gender equality.
“Sorry if I exist,” he tells the commission that he has to judge the project and that he thinks she is not Serena Bruno, but the secretary of Bruno Serena, a male architector. “Sorry if I exist” he says to his gay friend who is kissing his partner. Sorry if I exist, she says to the boss of the company where she works, where “women bring coffee to men, men are in the spotlight, women work behind the scenes and stay in the office until late”.

Scripted by Paula Cortellesi, Giulia Calenda and Ivan Cotroneo, the comedy intelligently describes the Italian reality. The cast is remarkable: in addition to excellent Paula Cortellesithere is Savino bezelwho plays Michela, the “shadow woman” of the boss and a wonderful Ennio Fantastichini. Francesco’s ex-wife is Stephanie Roccathe boyfriend is Marco Boccithe intern is Corrado Fortuna.
The comedy is very enjoyable. It falls into some stereotypes, as is often the case with Italian films, but the actors’ interpretation and most of the dialogues work and are fun.
Sorry if I exist! was shot in 2014 by Riccardo Milani, Paola Cortellesi’s partner and in some passages the film reminds a bit Loose minesby Ferzan Ozpetek (and the presence of Lunetta Savino and Ennio Fantastichini reinforces the quote). The film is inspired by a real architecture competition and at the work of Gwendolyn Salimeiwho with his T-studio won the tender to redevelop the “fourth floor” of the Corvial, imagined as a happy island, which later became an area of decay and unauthorized building. The project, which includes green common spaces, has not yet been completed.
