They claim to have never been to Zaanstad. Nevertheless, John and Jolanda Joor from Nibbixwoud have already received three parking charges from the municipality in question. When the stunned couple requests the photos from parking management, however, it turns out that the print shows a completely different car than their own trusted Skoda. But there is something else striking: the license plate in the photo is almost identical to that of their own car, except for the last letter.
“The only time we are at Zaanstad, we drive past it”
It is last March when the first levy from the municipality of Zaanstad is in the mailbox. Whether the Joor family would like to transfer 71.75 euros to parking fees. A second copy will follow in May, number three will hit the mat last Saturday. “We have nothing to do with Zaanstad, we will never get there,” says John Joor. “The only time we are at Zaanstad, we drive past it.”
Wrong scan car
The couple therefore decides to request the photo of the violation and then something soon falls on them. “The picture shows a white Kia Picanto,” said John. “And we have a silver-grey Skoda.” However, closer inspection of the photo reveals something else remarkable: the license plates of both cars are almost identical, except for the last letter. Where the car in the photo has a ‘K’ on the end, the car of the Joor family has an ‘X’. Apparently a carelessness of parking management Zaanstad is involved here.
Immediately after the first levy, the Joor family reported the mistake. The municipality of Zaanstad acknowledges the error and the fine is torn up. The problem is that the bills keep coming. “We came back from shopping last Saturday,” says Jolanda Joor. John adds seamlessly: “And then there was number three on the doormat.”
“We’re done with it, I’m not responding anymore”
The municipality of Zaanstad says that this is a unique case, that the problem is in the software of the scan car and that hard work is now being done to solve the problem. However, if a fourth levy is received by the Joor family, the municipality recommends calling. But John and Jolanda don’t feel like it anymore. “We are now completely done with it,” says John. “I don’t respond anymore,” Jolanda snaps in. “If a bailiff comes, I will forward them to the municipality. They will pay the fine themselves.”
