After the furious start to the new Bundesliga season, VfB Stuttgart has now also scored points on the transfer market: the Swabians have signed the Swiss U21 international Leonidas Stergiou from FC St. Gallen.
The 21-year-old central defender is on loan until the end of the season, as announced by VfB Stuttgart. According to media reports, there will then be a purchase option.
“We have been following Leonidas Stergiou’s development for a long time. He has already gained valuable experience in the Swiss Super League and as a Swiss U21 international. We warmly welcome Leonidas to VfB and look forward to our future together,” commented VfB -Sports Director Fabian Wohlgemuth the transfer to “vfb.de”.
Despite his young age, the defensive youngster has already played 139 games in the Swiss Super League.
Stergiou explained: “It feels incredibly good and it’s very nice to be able to sign a contract with a club like VfB Stuttgart. I’m very happy that it worked out. I exchanged a few words with Chadrac Akolo and just Heard good things about the club and its outstanding fans. VfB Stuttgart, the city and the region have a lot to offer. I’m looking forward to getting to know everything as soon as possible.”
Star before saying goodbye to VfB Stuttgart
The commitment could be an anticipation of an upcoming departure from VfB Stuttgart. Greek Konstantinos Mavropanos, who is currently injured, is about to leave West Ham United, according to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano. All documents have been exchanged, Stuttgart collects 20 million euros, five more million euros could flow as bonus payments, according to Romano.
“Sky” confirms that Mavropanos successfully completed the medical check on Monday evening.
The Stuttgart team started the new Bundesliga season 5-0 (2-0) over VfL Bochum at the weekend. On Friday (8:30 p.m.) they are guests at DFB Cup winners RB Leipzig.
