The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards would love to work with Tom Waits again. The guitarist recently spoke about this with the British music magazine “Uncut”.
Richards has collaborated with Tom Waits several times since their early studio sessions on 1985’s Rain Dogs. According to their own statements, they always had “great fun” together.
In the interview, Keith Richards said: “It’s not a problem with Tom. We didn’t have to do anything together, we just did it because we were together. Sometimes we write things together and sometimes we go out to eat together or something. It’s organic and great fun. I loved working with him and would do it again anytime Tom!”
The 79-year-old musician was “incredibly humbled” when he realized the only other person Tom has written songs with is his wife, Kathleen Brennan. Of this he said: “Kathleen is a very important part of what he does. They are a close couple. I think he only wrote with Kathleen – and with me.
I only found this out after the fact and was incredibly humbled about it. Those two are a tough duo to break into, man!”
“She is a hidden genius. What a great thing for a couple to be able to do. I can only think of one other couple that did it, Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, who wrote all the great songs for the Everly Brothers. Tom and Kathleen actually remind me of them. In a way, what they’re doing is a very traditional thing,” he continued.
Keith also wishes Tom would do more live gigs. He said: “He’s such a fantastic performer. He conjures up little tricks out of nowhere, a bit of shadow and movement and he’s got it. I wish he would do more live performances. I know he’s a little shy about it, but I and many others would love to see that happen. At the same time, you can only do it if you want to.”
