At least 18 people have died this Sunday in the bus fire in eastern Pakistan, after the vehicle collided with a van carrying gasoline drums, according to police sources.

The accident occurred on the highway, near the city of pindi bhattian, in the eastern province of Penjab, around 04:30 (23:30 GMT on Saturday).

“In the space of five minutes, the whole bus burned down. Eighteen people burned to death and another sixteen were injured, four of whom are in critical condition,” he told AFP. Fahad Ahmed, a police officer.

“Looks like the bus driver fell asleep”, he added, specifying that the van against which the bus collided had gasoline cans in the trunk.

The mortality on the roads of Pakistan is elevated due to bad roads, lack of road safety and dangerous driving. The buses are usually full and the use of the seat belt it is not very widespread.

In January, at least 40 people were killed when a bus fell off a bridge in the southwest of the country and exploded.
