FC Bayern has a huge goalkeeping problem. After numerous cancellations and transfer failures, the Munich team now seems to have finally found another goalkeeper. But who is Daniel Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv?
sport.de takes a look at the current developments in the goalkeeper search at FC Bayern:
Why FC Bayern needs a new goalkeeper
The past few weeks have been tough for the German record champions, especially with regard to the goalkeepers in head coach Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
After his serious leg injury, Manuel Neuer initially raised hopes that he could actually be back between the posts by the start of the season. But the 37-year-old had to have a metal plate removed from his leg, a major setback in rehab. How long Neuer will be out is still uncertain.
At the same time, two nominal substitutes parted ways: Yann Sommer made use of a contractual clause and went to Inter Milan, Alexander Nübel was loaned to VfB Stuttgart. Suddenly there was only Sven Ulreich as a new alternative.
“We need a second goalkeeper. I am convinced that we will find a solution by September 1st,” assured CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen after the Supercup defeat against RB Leipzig (0: 3). Neuer’s return to team training is now expected “in the next few weeks”, as Tuchel announced before the start of the league. A circumstance that also affects the transfer plans.
What has FC Bayern’s search looked like so far?
Chaotic. Since Manuel Neuer’s further downtime was a mystery for a long time, the crucial question could not be answered either: Do you prefer to look for a new number one or a second substitute to support Ulreich in the first half of the season? Only shortly before the start of the league did the squad planners agree to start the season with Ulreich and to sign a representative for the 35-year-old.
FC Bayern had concrete talks about a change with several top people. Again and again, however, Munich traded rejections.
Dreesen confirmed, for example, that the Spaniard Kepa should be signed, but then decided on Real Madrid. Thomas Tuchel is said to have personally phoned ManCity substitute Daniel Ortega, but the triple winner opposed it. It was said that ex-United star De Gea was also spoken to, but assurances about deployment times proved to be problematic. Brentford keeper David Raya should have been loaned out but opted for a move to Arsenal.
Other names reportedly discussed internally: Bono, who has now moved from Seville to Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, DFB goalkeeper Bernd Leno or Juve veteran Wojciech Szczesny. But the long search seems to have surprisingly come to an end.
This is the stand at Daniel Peretz
According to consistent reports from “Bild”, “Sky” and the Israeli TV broadcaster “Sport5”, FC Bayern have agreed on a transfer with Daniel Peretz from Maccabi Tel Aviv. The transfer saga could soon end with the 23-year-old, he is said to be signing a four-year contract.
The transfer modalities with the Conference League qualifier have apparently not yet been clarified. In view of the goalkeeper’s market value, “Bild” assumes a transfer fee of around four million euros. Transfer reporter Luca Bendoni writes from 5.5 to 6 million euros including bonus payments. His contract in Tel Aviv is actually valid until 2024.
Why FC Bayern wants Daniel Peretz
Unlike the most recently traded goalkeepers, Daniel Peretz is still unknown to many football fans. Nevertheless, the 1.90 meter tall goalkeeper fulfills the latest profile of the Munich squad planner: At 23 years old, he is young and capable of development. At the side of Neuer and Ulreich, Peretz could gain valuable experience in order to eventually move into the front row.
The financial aspect is also important: After the record transfer from Harry Kane, FC Bayern could close its goalkeeper construction site quite cheaply and possibly still leave leeway for the commitment of a new defensive midfielder – a wish of the head coach.
Daniel Peretz, who also has a German passport, was once trained at Maccabi Tel Aviv and has been an integral part of the team since 2020. He has been the first-choice goalkeeper for two years and has been under new Maccabi coach Robbie Keane since the start of the season.
The potential Bayern newcomer has only gained international experience at club level in the Conference League so far, he is currently qualifying with Maccabi.
In the national team jersey, he recently drew attention to himself with the U21s. In the European Championship group match against Germany (1-1) he was one of the best players on the pitch, and in the end Peretz and his team made it to the semi-finals. In November 2022 he was also allowed to celebrate his debut in the A-Elf.
