Kortrijk is the first Flemish city to plan a ‘Largest Forest’

Rotary Kortrijk Groeninghe planted about 2000 new native trees on the Vlasakker. That is one of the green areas in Hoog-Kortrijk that the city wants to upgrade and expand to 17 ha.

“The forest and nature area in Kortrijk is very small at the moment. That is why it is more than ever our ambition to realize at least 100 hectares of extra nature and forest. De Vlasakker is one of the projects in which the city really wants to invest in more public urban greenery,” says Kortrijk’s alderman for the environment, climate and biodiversity, Bert Herrewyn. The planting of the Largest Forest immediately becomes one of the ambitions of the administrative agreement ‘Kortrijk: best city in Flanders’ realized.

The forest on Vlasakker is therefore the realization of a special piece of new urban greenery located between the Etienne Sabbelaan, Mondayweg, the residential area, Tarweveld/Klaverveld, Vives University of Applied Sciences and Kulak University. Later on, the city wants to upgrade this green area in Hoog-Kortrijk and expand it to 17 ha, including the fields south of the Klaverstraat and Tarweveld.

In addition, a better connection with the environment, such as with the colleges nearby, is also being sought.
