Lucas Matzerath and Angelina Koehler have missed a World Cup medal. Medal hope Anna Elendt was surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary heat.
Lucas Matzerath and Angelina Koehler missed a medal on the second final day of the pool swimmers at the swimming world championships in Japan. Matzerath was fifth in the 100m breaststroke, as was Köhler in the 100m butterfly immediately afterwards.
In 57.05 seconds, the Berliner equaled the German record she had set in the intermediate run the day before. With his final time of 58.88 seconds, Matzerath was 14 hundredths of a second faster than the record he set in the heat on Sunday. The Chinese Qin Haiyang (57.69) and Zhang Yufei (56.12) became world champions.
Braunschweig and Miroslaw fail in the semi-finals
Backstroke swimmer Ole Braunschweig did not make it to the final over 100 m backstroke. In the semi-finals, the Berliner came in after 54.00 seconds and thus ended up in 15th place in the addition of both runs. The 25-year-old was 79 hundredths short of the final ticket, for a place in the top eight he would have had to swim a personal best. Rafael Miroslaw was also eliminated over the 200 m freestyle in 12th place in the semifinals in 1:46.38 minutes, a good three tenths were missing in the final.
medal hope Elendt is eliminated, Gose in the final
Anna Elendt was also completely surprisingly eliminated in the preliminary heat at the World Cup. On Monday, the breaststroker finished 19th in the 100m with a time of 1:07.09 minutes, missing out on the semi-finals. Elendt had traveled to Fukuoka as Vice World Champion on this route. Completely frustrated, the 21-year-old did not want to comment on her early departure.
At the German Championships in Berlin, she pulled a thigh muscle a good two weeks ago. Whether she was still affected remained open.
Gose in fifth place in the final
One day after her seventh place over 400 meters, freestyle specialist Isabel Gose swam over 1,500 meters in fifth place in the final. The 21-year-old struck after 15:59.67 minutes.
Backstroke swimmer Ole Braunschweig reached the 100-meter semifinals in sixth place in 53.57 seconds. Completely exhausted, the 25-year-old Berliner had to sit down in the interview zone. “It has to be like this”he said. “If you couldn’t push yourself that hard at a World Cup, something would have gone wrong.”
Märtens does without 200 meters freestyle
Rafael Miroslaw also made it into the top 16 in the 200m freestyle. Lukas Märtens, on the other hand, did not start on this route – contrary to what was originally planned. The 21-year-old only won bronze over double the distance on Sunday. Märtens now wants to recover and focus on the 800 and 1,500 meter races.
The heat over 800 meters takes place on Tuesday (from 3.30 a.m./CEST). In the race, open water double world champion Florian Wellbrock also intervenes in the pool for the first time. On Monday evening (local time, 1:00 p.m. CEST), breaststroke swimmer Lucas Matzerath has a chance of winning a medal over 100 meters.
