Grolloo’s last dirt road finally has a name: Meulendwarsdiek

“He must have been standing there.” Bas Luinge points to an elevation in the meadow. Luinge is the grandson of Grolloo’s last miller. “In 1892 the mill came into the possession of my family through an inheritance. My grandfather was a miller until a dairy was built in Grolloo, with a corn mill next to it. Then my grandfather started working there.” The mill then stood idle in the country and was demolished in 1920.

Little is known about the mill. Reinders and other volunteers of the foundation Old Groll are eagerly looking for information. “We’ve done some sleuthing around the country and found weights on the flour sacks. And there’s an old map with the mill marked on it.”

Soon they hope to continue digging for the foundation together with the owner of the land.

The fact that the dirt road now has a name that refers to the mill is a great moment for Luinge. “I had been thinking about giving this dirt road a name for four years. Meulendiek couldn’t, because it was already there. Then Bertus Reinders came up with a name Meulendwarf. I am very happy with it. The last dirt road has a name.”
