Sony’s DualSense controller is packed with gaming functionality – but this sometimes has a negative impact on battery life. A trick can help.
Anyone who regularly gambles on the PS5 has certainly noticed that the battery in the controller is often empty after a few hours. However, the runtime can be drastically extended with one setting. TECHBOOK explains how it works.
So the battery in the PS5 controller lasts longer
Sony states a battery life of 12 to 15 hours for the DualSense controller, which was released together with the PS5. But the reality looks different. Many PS5 owners are complaining on social media about significantly worse values. Some gamers only reach 4 to 5 hours. The more expensive DualSense Edge controller for the PS5 is even more affected, the one with a smaller battery than the standard version have to get by.
However, YouTuber “John Classcock” found a way to extend the runtime by several hours. The simple battery trick involves the PS5 controller’s built-in microphone. By default, the microphone is on when you start the PlayStation and no headset is connected. The reason for this is the voice control of the console, which is waiting for a user command. However, this function can be easily disabled in the settings under volume>microphone>microphone status when logged in switch off with the “Mute” option. This means the microphone is switched off by default, but can be activated at any time by pressing the “PS” button on the controller.

In the sound settings of the PS5, users can reduce the volume of the built-in speaker. The option is below volume>volume>controller speaker to find. Alternatively, this option can be set in the settings under Accesories>controllers>Volume (speaker for controller) change.
If you’re already in the accessory settings, you should consider reducing the intensity of the haptic feedback. This excellent feature in the PS5 controller ensures an intense gaming experience, but it drains the battery due to strong mechanical movement. If you change the option to “moderate”, you can still enjoy the haptic feedback and at the same time extend the runtime a bit. Simply in the settings below Accesories>controllers>vibration intensity adjust and try the option.
