Vlaams Belang organizes an annual Sporen celebration with an emphasis on Flemish independence

With about 1,500 people in attendance, Vlaams Belang started the festivities around 11 July. Member of Parliament and local leader Wouter Vermeersch welcomed those present. He denounced the lack of fiscal reform and Belgium’s financial situation. Following the release of the most heavily convicted pedophile in the country, Vermeersch also lashed out at fellow townsman and Minister of Justice Vincent Van Quickenborne (Open Vld). “A society that does not protect the most vulnerable, our children, cannot call itself a constitutional state,” says Vermeersch. “Every sentence must be served until the very last day.”

Momentum for Flemish independence coming

Chairman Tom Van Grieken made an inspired plea for an independent Flanders. “Only an independent Flanders can lead us out of the political stagnation,” he said. Van Grieken also sees differences between Vlaams Belang and N-VA. In doing so, he mainly cites the switch that N-VA made towards the PS. “Tell them that you do not want to be a member of an N-VA that stands for a New Vooruit Alliance. Let 2024 become an appointment with history,” Van Grieken proclaimed. The VB chairman also praised the “rebellious national character” of the Flemish people.” He refers to the rebellious and courageous past of the Flemish people, but calls today’s leaders cowardly. “I feel that a momentum is approaching in which Flanders can finally put its fist on the table. 2024 can offer us that momentum.” , concluded Tom van Greeks.
