Ziyech is to follow as fourth
After N’Golo Kanté (32; free transfer to Al-Ittihad) and Kalidou Koulibaly (32; for 23 million euros to Al-Hilal), the next Chelsea professional is moving to the financially strong Saudi Pro League. Newly promoted Al-Ahli SFC announced the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy on Wednesday evening, who is said to have signed a three-year contract.
The fee for the Senegalese international is said to be around 18.5 million euros. This makes Mendy the second most expensive over-30 goalkeeper. Only Jasper Cillessen (34) was €35 million more expensive in 2019 at the age of 30 when he moved from FC Barcelona to FC Valencia. Mendy is said to have a lucrative salary of around 11 million euros plus 3 million euros in bonuses at Al-Ahli.
With Lewandowski, Mané & Ronaldo: Most expensive Ü30 transfers in history
Mendy joined the Blues in 2020 for €24m from FC Stade Rennes. In total, he played 105 games for Chelsea, in which he kept 49 clean sheets. There were 12 appearances for the Londoners last season, and he will be remembered for his starring role in the 2021 Champions League win, conceding just two goals in seven knockout games.
Like Al-Ittihad, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr, Al-Ahli belongs to the Saudi Public Investment Fund, which is chaired by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. He has made it his goal to bring the 2030 World Cup to Saudi Arabia and to use sport to achieve a better image for his country, which is often criticized for its human rights situation. Al-Nassr, who was able to sign Cristiano Ronaldo (38) last winter, will soon be the last of the four clubs to be able to sign a Chelsea professional with Hakim Ziyech (30).
