During a fan event, Netflix showed some trailers, behind-the-scenes insights and other videos. TECHBOOK provides an overview.
On Sunday, June 18, 2023 (June 17, 8:00 p.m. local time in Brazil), Netflix again held its big Tudum fan event. Numerous stars such as Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Chris Hemsworth, Jamie Dornan, Sophia Boutella, Nicola Coughlin and Arnold Schwarzenegger were there, but many big names were also involved from outside. Incidentally, the name of the event, “Tudum,” refers to the iconic Netflix sound everyone hears when they start up the streaming service. Netflix referenced over 20 Netflix series and movies at the event and shared some insights. TECHBOOK presents the highlights.

Netflix has during the fan event not only showed trailers and clips, but also brought many stars onto the stage. The TECHBOOK editors present their personal highlights.
Netflix unveils first trailer for live-action series One Piece
The anime (or manga) “One Piece” is one of the most popular and, with over 1000 episodes, also the longest-lived in the world. It has been known for some time that Netflix is planning a live-action series. The provider finally showed a trailer at the Netflix Tudum Event 2023. In it we see Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), who can become a rubber man thanks to the consumption of a so-called devil fruit and wants to become the greatest pirate of all time, and his core crew. So far, Netflix has planned an eight-episode season of the series.
In terms of content, the streaming service is probably based on the so-called “East Blue” storyline, i.e. also the first section of the manga and anime series. For the series, the US provider worked closely with the creator of the manga, Eiichiro Oda. Incidentally, “One Piece” is scheduled to start on August 31, 2023 and the voice actors of the anime are returning for the German version.

“Live-action anime adaptations – especially shonen – are always a dangerous thing. They can make the fan heart beat faster or cause endless shame. Because the exaggerations that are epic in anime can seem slightly parodic in the live-action version. Genre-typical humorous elements quickly turn into unintentionally ridiculous. The degree between fidelity to the template and complete failure is therefore narrow. Very small. But the trailer for the new One-Piece series manages to strike the right balance, even though One Piece in particular thrives on exaggerations and caricatures. It remains to be seen how much flair the new series can actually convey. But the first glimpses into the adventures of the pirate king-to-be are promising – if you are willing to get involved with the new format.” Natalie Wetzel, editor
Avatar: The Last Airbender teaser clip
And another anime live-action adaptation is in the starting blocks on Netflix: “Avatar: The Last Airbender”. The project is based on the animated series “Avatar – Last Airbender”, which was broadcast in three seasons between 2005 and 2008 and has since become one of the most successful in the world. There’s not too much to see in the teaser Netflix showed at the Tudum event. But we now know for sure that the 2024 series should be launched on the platform. In addition, the cast of the series was partly on site and gave some personal insights.
You can also see an animation of the symbols of the four elements that are crucial to the story: fire, water, earth and air. Because the eponymous avatar is a so-called tamer who can control all four elements to a certain extent, while normal tamers only have their birth element. After the Fire Nation embarks on a devastating war, it falls to the last airbender and current avatar, Aang, to restore peace.

“The animated series “Avatar” used to be one of my absolute favorite series! After the somewhat unsuccessful cinema film from 2010, I am actually very happy that Netflix wants to make another attempt as a series. Of course, that has the potential to backfire properly. Impressive fight scene with Henry Cavill and Co. for “The Witcher” season 3
The 3rd season of the fantasy series “The Witcher” will start on Netflix in June 2023. During the Tudum event, Netflix showed a nearly three-minute fight sequence starring Henry Cavill. In previous seasons, especially the first, the lavishly staged fight scenes were an essential part of the success and brought enormous attention to the series.
In “The Witcher” season 3, the plot comes to a head because different factions are trying to get hold of Princess Ciri – on the one hand because of her political importance, but above all because of her special magical abilities. A political conflict is also brewing in the background. This season marks what will be Henry Cavill’s iconic title role as Geralt of Rivia for the last time. As of season 4, Chris Hemsworth takes over the character. Cavill also offered an emotional farewell to fans and fellow cast members during the Tudum event.

“In the scene that Netflix has now shown, we see how first Ciri fights against an overwhelming majority; later Yennefer, Geralt and other companions join them to support them. The clip has – rightly so in my opinion – caused a lot of media coverage. On the one hand, this is certainly due to the presence of Cavill, who is known for shooting his own stunts with great attention to detail. On the other hand, the staging itself was well received by the fans and I’m no exception. “Wednesday” cast discusses season 2 of the Netflix series
In 2022 there was hardly a series more successful than “Wednesday” across all streaming services. This is probably one of the reasons why it quickly became clear that there should be a second season. So far, however, little is known about the sequel. During the fan event, part of the cast, including leading actress Jenna Ortega, spoke up. On the one hand, fan theories about the first season were taken up, on the other hand, season 2 was teased in a few words. And it has been revealed that in any case, another member of the Addams Family will appear in the sequel

“For me, as a die-hard Addams Family fan, the first season of Wednesday was a mixed bag. The result of fantasy, high school setting and an anti-heroine that has it all is solid, but can retain little of the original, whimsical humor and charm of the Addams Family. The first season is based too much on the common recipe for success in teen series, Wednesday – Wednesday of all places! – brought two potential boyfriends at once. But Jenna Ortega hinted in an interview with Variety that the second season will hopefully end these romances, which don’t fit the solitary Wednesday at all. In addition to these personal highlights from the editors, there were of course numerous other notable announcements, teasers, trailers, new images and much more.
3 body issue
One of the most prestigious projects in the Netflix pipeline could not be missing from the Tudum event: “3 Body Problem”. On the one hand, this is a well-known novel that is now being implemented by the “Game of Thrones” makers. Both Davis Benioff and DB Weiss were there for the announcement. In addition, there was finally a trailer to see, which was immediately well received on social media.
Squid Game Season 2
After it has been quiet for some time about the most successful Netflix series of all time, Tudum finally had news about “Squid Game” Season 2. Among other things, it is now clear that the sequel will be released in 2024. All information about Season 2 can be found in our overview article.
Rebel Moon
Also in attendance were three of the biggest names in the Rebel Moon project, Zach and Deborah Snyder and Sophia Boutella. The sci-fi epic is scheduled to launch on Netflix on December 22, 2023. A video game is also in the pipeline.
