Since the Haas team entered Formula 1, Günther Steiner has been in charge of the US racing team as team boss. The South Tyrolean is the face of Haas and has achieved a kind of cult status, not least thanks to the Netflix documentary “Drive to Survive”. Steiner has now emphasized that a timely move to one of the top teams in Formula 1 is out of the question for him.
In an interview with the English “Mirror”, when asked whether he could imagine saying goodbye to Ferrari, for example, the 58-year-old answered unequivocally: “No!”
As is well known, the lines to the Italian car manufacturer Haas are short, as Ferrari works with the US team as an engine supplier. Nevertheless, Steiner ruled out turning his back on Haas, at least in the medium term.
“I’d love to help Haas win, it would make me happy! That desire is bigger than going into a team and just being a steward of success. I’m a Haas man! I don’t know , whether forever, but for the foreseeable future!”
Haas team still “heart project” for Steiner
In this country, Günther Steiner is sometimes viewed critically and has lost popularity after he quit working with Mick Schumacher as a regular driver at Haas late last autumn.
With Nico Hülkenberg, however, Steiner has also brought the only remaining German Formula 1 driver into the team, thus enabling the veteran to make his comeback in the premier class of motorsport.
Steiner justified his connection to the team of owner Gene Haas primarily with the fact that he was involved in the designer’s F1 adventure from the start: “If you’re part of it from the first moment, you’re more attached to it than if you’re just for is used as the manager for a certain period of time. That makes a difference. Even if the team isn’t mine, it’s still a project that’s close to my heart.”
