Trump lawyers John Rowley and Jim Trusty say in a statement that it was “an honor” to defend the former president, and “we know he will be proven right.” It is not clear why the lawyers are leaving.

“I want to thank Jim Trusty and John Rowley for their work, but they had to go up against a very dishonest, corrupt, evil and ‘sick’ group of people, the likes of which we have never seen before,” Trump said on his own social network Truth. Social. He says in the case, which he calls “the Greatest Witch Hunt of all time”, to be assisted by lawyer Todd Blanche. His team of lawyers will be expanded even further later, according to the former president.

The lawyers’ departure comes just hours after Trump was formally charged in a case involving classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. It is the first time in US history that a former president has faced a federal indictment.

According to Trump, his associate Walt Nauta has also been charged. He would have helped Trump move the boxes of classified documents. “I just got word that the ‘rogues’ of the Department of Injustice are going to sue a wonderful man,” Trump said via Truth Social. Walt Nauta was Trump’s personal assistant.

Recently, one of Trump’s top lawyers resigned. Tim Parlatore left in mid-May for “personal reasons”. “It has nothing to do with a lack of confidence in the case,” the lawyer emphasized at the time.

Trusty and Rowley’s surprise announcement could lead to additional complications ahead of Trump’s scheduled appearance in federal court in Miami on Tuesday, Reuters reports. Furthermore, it is not really clear what the consequences are.

Multiple lawsuits

Several lawsuits are pending against the former president, who is currently leading in the polls for the Republican primary.

Trump recently lost a civil lawsuit against writer E. Jean Carroll: the jury found that he was guilty of sexual abuse. Trump must pay about $ 5 million (4.6 million euros) in damages to Carroll. A criminal case against Trump regarding payments to porn star Stormy Daniels will start on March 25, 2024.
