When singer and artist Anne Mattila has given up control, her biggest dreams have come true.

– Mother said that you will probably become a singer when you sing so well. Such words of encouragement will be remembered forever, Anne smiles.
Anne knows that you also have to be honest with the child, but she doesn’t believe in the danger of excessive praise. That’s why Anne enjoys the children’s studio of her Art Café, where children can paint and draw. The twinkling pride in the children’s eyes of their own work – especially when they have been put up on the wall, also leaves its mark on Anne.

Now Anne is a mother herself. Anne had already accepted the idea that she would never have a child of her own. When the food tasted strange around Christmas 2021, Anne decided to take a pregnancy test.
– I had forgotten to buy my husband a Christmas present, so I jokingly told him that here is a present for you. I came upstairs and said “you know what, Merry Christmas”. It was a wonderful moment, Anne describes.
– I had stopped stressing and waiting. When I gave up control, we had a little baby, says Anne.
Anne was used to spending Christmas with her large family. There were 16 grandchildren at the time.
– At Christmas, when everyone took their children who were afraid of Santa Claus in their arms, I thought it would be wonderful if I had one of my own.
– That Christmas, my little sister, who is 10 years younger Anita told the other siblings that “Anne must be pregnant, her eyes are shining strangely”, says Anne.
Now a nine-month-old is waiting at home Mikael-son. Anne has enjoyed motherhood.
– I’ve taken care of a lot of children, so I didn’t have any tension with the everyday life of a baby. Although it came as a surprise how little mothers sleep, Anne laughs.
Motherhood has also taught me to focus even more on the moment.
– I had said that I was going to paint while the child slept during the day. I haven’t really painted or done anything. I was told to always sleep when the baby sleeps – and I trusted that advice. It helped me cope, says Anne.

Bad advice
During her life, Anne has also received advice that she could have ignored in retrospect. Anne was only 16 years old when Asphalt jungle-hit made him a star. However, the talented singer had also dreamed of working as a painter throughout his childhood.
– Then I got a tip that the Finnish people don’t understand that there are two professions. They said it sounds so aunty if I say I’m a painter. Then I wasn’t so brave and I decided not to say my dream in public, Anne says.
However, Anne did not stop painting.
– Around the age of 25, I realized that I won’t feel completely happy if I don’t do what I’ve always dreamed of, says Anne.
When Anne started taking her work to exhibitions, she got the idea of an art cafe. He was on the road because of gig trips anyway, and he didn’t need another traveling profession at the same time.
– I sang One more life – in my song about this theme. If there is only this one life, how can I fit all my dreams into it. I was nervous about going into art when I was serious, because I wondered if the audience would think I had abandoned them and if I would have to explain if I was still a singer, says Anne.

Reversing principles
Anne describes that as the age of 40 approaches, she has become more relaxed. Along the way, he has overturned many of his own principles and those planted by others. Anne says that she once decided, for example, not to give a single interview during her pregnancy. During her pregnancy, however, she thought why not.
– I also thought when I was younger that I couldn’t fall in love with an older man, Anne says and continues that she has learned that a soulmate doesn’t look at age.
Anne has considered one of her musician husbands Kari Tenkulan with 12 years. Other things have united more than the 17-year age difference has separated.
– It is often dangerous to guess what others are thinking. Suddenly there is no life on its own. Fear prevents life from happening as it should happen, says Anne.
The words of an old man

Anne describes that she still wears the cloak of a teenage star. Many people remember him in addition to Asfaltviitako, among other things Let’s cancel the wedding – from the hit.
– I’m with you and I’m proud of them too. To get to know me as an artist as I am now, one would have to listen to the latest work.
At the end of May, Anne released a new album after a seven-year hiatus. The way the heart chooses -album was created as a collaboration between Anne and her husband.
– He is the only person in the world who knows my deepest dreams about how I want the album to sound, says Anne.
A few years ago, an old man sat down in Anne’s art cafe, who now plays a big role in the birth of the album. Anne painted the commissioned work and the man began to tell his life story. The man said he was closer to 90 years old.
– He had been in the travel profession. Tears came to her eyes and she said that it all feels like yesterday. He said that time is important to remember. I wanted to hear life advice from him. He looked me in the eyes and said that “the path that the heart chooses is the best path of all,” says Anne.
The encounter and the man’s words stayed in Anne’s mind.
– I had followed my own path in art, but I had a different situation when it came to music. I knew what I wanted to do, but I wondered if I had the courage to go 100 percent into it. That’s when it dawned on me that I have to go on this path: to write songs and life stories that I’ve experienced and heard, says Anne.
The story of a man and an important lesson ended up on the title track of the album. Anne feels that she is on the right track again – the control lever is free.
