FC Bayern Munich fought a last-minute draw at Red Bull Salzburg. After the game, however, Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann is still dissatisfied – because of a decision.
1-1 in the last second, the next surprising defeat narrowly averted – Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann could actually breathe a little more deeply after the draw in the first knockout round of the Champions League at Red Bull Salzburg. But nothing there: The Bayern coach was pissed off after the game. “An incredibly bad decision” rumbled the 34-year-old at “DAZN”, it was hard to get. Target of Nagelsmanns Zorn: The referee team around the English referee Michael Oliver.
What happened?
The fourth minute of stoppage time. After the 1-1 equalizer by Kingsley Coman, Munich still pressed for the winning goal. Then the controversial scene: An arc lamp slowly sinks into the five of the hosts. Salzburg goalkeeper Philipp Köhn jumps up, unhappily punches the ball out of the danger zone – right in front of Leroy Sané’s feet, who theoretically only has to push the ball into the empty goal.
But Oliver blows his whistle immediately – because Köhn was hindered in defending by Thomas Müller. The Bayern striker stood on the six-yard line, actually stayed completely out of the game, but slightly hindered Köhn. A tough decision, but not the wrong one at all.
Nagelsmann, however, saw Bayern at a disadvantage – and talked himself into a rage: “There is the much-cited Video Assistant Referee. Then I just let the action run to the end and see whether Leroy shoots the ball into the goal that is only occupied by field players, Then the goal is checked and if it’s a foul then I blow the whistle.”
When evaluating game situations, incorrect weighting would be given: “You can’t always tell me when it’s seven meters offside that you let the situation continue for 28 minutes and wave afterwards because everything is checked anyway, and the situation in the opponent’s six-yard box without Physical contact, it’s blown. That’s a 100% chance to score.”
