Russia wants to help Brazil build nuclear power plants

MOSCOW/BRASLIA (dpa-AFX) – During a state visit to Moscow, Russia offered Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro to participate in the construction of new nuclear power plants in the largest country in Latin America. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his guest Bolsonaro announced on Wednesday that they would expand their cooperation and strengthen the strategic partnership. There was also a meeting between the foreign and defense ministers of both countries

– a format that Russia maintains with only a few states.

According to experts, with his trip across the Atlantic accompanied by business representatives, Bolsonaro also wants to show that he still has partners abroad. His domestic popularity ratings have plummeted. Criticism also arose at the time of his visit to Russia in the midst of the Ukraine crisis. In Moscow, Bolsonaro then declared his “solidarity” to the Russian side, but left open whether he was referring to the conflict with Ukraine. Traditionally, Brazilian diplomacy is known for not taking sides and avoiding foreign policy conflicts.
