Only confirmation is missing
At the end of April, Werder Bremen’s license manager Clemens Fritz described the media reports about the interest of the North Germans in Fortuna Düsseldorf’s center forward Dawid Kownacki as “a bit of speculation”. As the “Picture“-Zeitung now reports that the free transfer of the 26-year-old to the Weser seems to be about to be completed. According to this, the sixth-best scorer in the 2nd Bundesliga at Osterdeich with twelve goals has already completed the medical check-up. Also the portaldyke room‘ describes the change as ‘fixed’.

Kownacki’s contract on the Rhine expires in the summer. The Pole initially switched to Fortuna on loan from Sampdoria in 2019 and was then permanently committed for 6.75 million euros. In the second half of last season, F95 lent the offensive power to their training club Lech Posen. In total, Kownacki has made 101 appearances for Düsseldorf in the past four years, in which he contributed 43 goals. As of now, Werder have five potential strikers available for the coming season, but the future of the successful duo Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch is still unclear. The exit clause for the latter is still valid until June 1st, Ducksch himself recently announced that a decision would be made soon.

Kownacki change to Bremen: No alternative for Füllkrug or Ducksch
The seven-time Poland international would be Bremen’s first external signing for the 2023/24 season. An official confirmation of the transfer from the Bundesliga club can be expected at the beginning of the week, Kownacki has already signed a long-term contract in Bremen, the newspaper reports. From the club’s point of view, however, the obligation should not be understood as a substitute for possible departures from Füllkrug or Ducksch, but as an additional option for the Bremen attack. In the negotiations, the professional was particularly impressed by Ole Werner’s style, which was tailored to Werder and tailored to his playing style.

In addition to Bremen, Freiburg, Mönchengladbach, Union Berlin and TSG Hoffenheim were also recently considered interested in Kownacki’s services. The offensive man, next to Darmstadt’s central defender Patric Pfeiffer (23), by far the most valuable second division player with an expiring contract, had decided against an extension at Fortuna in order to “take the next step”. Werder had made the league arithmetically perfect with the 1-1 draw against 1. FC Köln on the last match day and have had the appropriate security in terms of squad planning since then.
