Statement of the day | It is good that the Dutch government is strengthening ties with China

The fact that the Dutch government is strengthening ties with China raises eyebrows. Items made in the country are in great demand with us. But at the same time, there are concerns about China’s growing power.

After the Chinese vice president was in The Hague last week, Minister Wopke Hoekstra of Foreign Affairs will go to Beijing on Monday for a working visit. Prime Minister Mark Rutte will also be heading in that direction later this year.

The Chinese visit to the Netherlands took place at the request of Beijing, which according to experts is engaged in a charm offensive in Europe now that relations with the United States have soured. This could also be at the expense of trade relations with the European Union.

Foreign Trade Minister Liesje Schreinemacher emphasized that the Netherlands likes to trade with the Chinese. A lot of money is involved in this. In 2021, trade between the Netherlands and China amounted to no less than 73 billion euros.

However, this economic importance does not alter the fact that many view China with suspicion because of human rights, the oppression of Uyghurs, the pro-Russian attitude and threatening language towards Taiwan.

What do you think? Is it good that the Netherlands is strengthening ties with China from an economic point of view or is it better for our government to take a step back? Participate in the statement of the day and give your opinion.
