Fashion 2023: The basics that solve winter

If you ask ChatGPT, the most consulted Artificial Intelligence chat bot in the world, prudently responds to how Argentine fashion will be next season: “As a language model, I do not have the ability to accurately predict fashion in Argentina for the year 2023”. But then he begins to list some of the prevailing global trends when it comes to clothing and fashion culture it means. Firstly, it indicates the interest of consumers in a more inclusive fashion and less marked in terms of gender. Second, it points to sustainability values, central in the clothing industry and consumption today. He also talks about the need to comfort and practicality, after the years of confinement and low social activity that the pandemic determined, as a criterion that is imposed when choosing an outfit. And he points out, to conclude, the already eternal supremacy of the sportswearin addition to the taste for buy vintage or second-hand, which millennials and centennials have elevated to cult status.

This list characterizes very well the “philosophical” framework that guides consumption and clothing design today, but in Argentina that panorama acquires particular edging: a market always in crisis, without inputs, and in which established brands and designers fight hard to stay afloat. They don’t always succeed, which is detrimental to the fashion market and also to customers who lose their favorite labels one by one, the ones they always buy from because the clothes fit well and represent them.

Specialists do not tire of repeating that trends are increasingly relative, because the public is more faithful to their own style, their needs and their wishes every day. It does not allow itself to be guided by the fashion mandates that descend from the elites and, if it is going to copy a way of dressing, it will be more from influencers, people they feel closest to and with whom they share tastes and lifestyles.

The catwalks, however, are always an inspiration and Argentine fashion has already recovered its main show weeks this season: Argentina Fashion Week, Designers BA and Bafweek, which add to the shows and campaigns of the most prominent designers and labels.

From this combo of proposals, the predominant ideas for this year emerge. Here we review the main ones.

What we are going to use. The fashion editor of Marie Claire magazine, Teresa Napolillo, details for NEWS the news that will change our look in 2023:

Monogarments. Especially at night, they are a comfortable novelty, easy to wear, that slims the silhouette. Attached to the body, with transparencies and cuts that reveal the skin, they are usually intervened with eco-leather (we will see this material at all times, everywhere). Fabián Zitta, for example, opened his show with a spectacular black mono-garment.

Night dress

Masculine style. On the catwalks, very elaborate tailoring was seen, with an oversize jacket, vest and short and wide pants. A garment that is going to have a lot of presence from now on is also beginning to be seen, a jacket-blazer, much more attached to the body.

puffer. The dictionary definition of this word speaks of a coat divided into “air” sections. The Uniqlo brand took this texture everywhere and at any time, and made it a classic for winter. On that basis, the designers of the world invented models and accessories that had those air sections as protagonists. Increasingly sophisticated, jackets, handbags and puffer coats will not leave us for long.

White dress

Shoes. Boots and slippers are still in style and the stars are knee-high boots, wrinkled and roomy. The handbags are also a very present accessory, which can change the imprint of a look.

Overlays and textures. Putting on a dress, over pants, with a jacket, crossbody bag and scarf, will be common this winter. Eco-leather is all the rage for day and night, black and colours. The miniskirt reigns once again, especially on nights out.

Design. Regarding the author’s work, “there is an outbreak of emerging designers who work with new technologies to achieve sustainable materials. And some brands that were consolidated during the pandemic also stand out, for an Under-21 public, with collections of divers, miniskirts and cargo pants, with a lot of arrival among the youngest ”, explains Teresa Napolillo.

When it comes to haute couture, “the biggest change that almost all designers have made is to work on demand. It is a way to sustain themselves in the current market conditions”, says Napolillo.

Daniela Urzi

What basic purchases does the editor of Marie Claire recommend for this year? A long white shirt and a thin tie, if possible made of eco-leather; an evening jumpsuit, with transparencies and shine, and a roomy urban jumpsuit, comfortable to wear with booties. For the day, a blazer and wide and short pants. An indicative wardrobe, to elegantly go through the cold season of 2023.
