Hennig and Co. go into the team sprint with a relay swing
The German cross-country skiers have already surpassed their Olympic duty with relay silver. Four days after the first Beijing coup, Katharina Hennig and Katherine Sauerbrey, who were in such a brilliant mood, are now dying for the freestyle. In today’s team sprint, the two classic specialists are among the medal candidates in their current brilliant form. “We’ll fight like pigs again. We have a chance and we’re hot,” announced Hennig. While the men’s duo Janosch Brugger/Albert Kuchler are clear outsiders in the competition, which was brought forward by almost two hours to 3:15 p.m. local time (8:15 a.m. CET) due to the freezing cold in Zhangjiakou, a lot is possible for the two sports soldiers.

Short track ace Seidel bids farewell to the Olympics
Germany’s short track hope Anna Seidel is today for the last time on Olympic ice. Her first and only competition finally begins on Wednesday with the 1500 m race. The goals of the 23-year-old are cautious after a complicated preparation, just taking part is a success. “I have to realize that I’ve already achieved my big goal of coming here,” said Seidel. But she wants to at least make it into the semifinals: “You don’t come here to get kicked out in the first round.” But what comes after that? She still wants to run the World Cup in March, but she will very likely not be there for the next Winter Games in 2026. A fourth Olympic start, according to Seidel, “is relatively impossible.”

Women’s relay to Herrmann is aiming for a medal
Led by individual Olympic champion Denise Herrmann, the German biathletes want to get involved in the battle for the relay medals this Wednesday from 8:45 a.m. CET. The DSV sends start runner Vanessa Voigt, Vanessa Hinz, Franziska Preuss and Herrmann into the race over 4×6 km. “We’ve been looking forward to the relay all year,” said Herrmann, who won the singles gold in China for the only German medal in eight biathlon races so far. Top favorites Norway will be without Ingrid Landmark Tandrevold, who has returned home after suffering a faint spell in the pursuit. Other medal contenders are Sweden, France, Belarus and Russia.

Slalom hope Straßer ready for “very close race”
Linus Straßer is a medal candidate in the Olympic slalom today (3:15/6:45 a.m. CET). But nowhere is the field of contenders larger. “It’s the most brutal competition at the moment,” says DSV Alpine boss Wolfgang Maier. In six races this season there were six different winners, only four racers were on the “podium” twice, including Straßer. He predicts a “very close race”, “it will be tough”.

medal table
Let’s take a look at the status of things in the medal table. Yesterday Norway put in an intermediate sprint with three Olympic victories and pulled away to twelve gold and seven silver and bronze plaques. Germany is still second (9 gold, 6 silver, 3 bronze). Behind the USA (7th, 6th, 4th) follows Austria in 4th place (6th, 6th, 4th). Switzerland (5, 0, 5) is in 8th place.

what else happens
The quarter-finals in the men’s ice hockey tournament are also of interest. The duel between Sweden and Canada certainly has the best sound. Before that, the USA will play against Slovakia, the ROC team against Denmark and Finland against Switzerland. Of course, curling is also being done diligently again. And in the promising Yanqing ice track, the bobsleigh athletes train in the women’s four and two.

The decisions of the day
Eight complete sets of medals plus bronze in women’s ice hockey are at stake today. We will start with the ski freestylers in men’s slopestyle. Precious metal will be awarded from about half past three. The alpine men’s slalom is already running at the same time, with the final round starting at 6:45 a.m. CET, ie reaching into the Central European morning. The women’s biathlon relay follows two hours later. The cross-country skiers carry out their team sprint decisions for women and men. During the bronze medal game in women’s ice hockey between Finland and Switzerland, the ski freestylers jump for precious metal in the aerials. And then there’s the search for Olympic champions in short rack – in the men’s 5,000 meter relay and the women’s 1,500 meter relay.
