Center Pompidou in Paris will close at the end of 2025 to 2030 for a thorough renovation. The closure was originally planned from September this year to 2026/2027, but the works have been postponed due to the 2024 Olympic Games in the French capital.
This was announced by the French culture minister Rima Abdul Malak. The culture and art institution estimates the cost of the renovation at around 262 million euros. Two years ago it was still 200 million. Among other things, new lifts are being installed, fire protection is being revised and asbestos must be removed from the leading center for modern art.
The museum with its colorful pipes and tubes on the facade is one of the main attractions of Paris. The building, designed by top architects Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, was an initiative of former French president Georges Pompidou and opened in 1977. It now shows the necessary age defects.
More than 100,000 works
With more than 100,000 works, the center has one of the most important collections of modern and contemporary art. The museum also shows its collection outside Paris, including in the eastern French city of Metz, Shanghai, Malaga and Brussels.
