After the departure of Johannes Spors (39), Vitesse Arnhem has found a new technical director, and it is again a young German. Benjamin Schmedes (36) takes over the sporting leadership. The former sports director or sports director of VfL Osnabrück and HSV chief scout will receive a contract until June 2024. When he was introduced, the new man spoke of European competition as a goal.
“Vitesse struck me as a professional and warm-hearted club with a great history,” Schmedes explained his decision. “I’m attracted to the football philosophy and the club’s potential and I believe in more. With the ambition to play structurally European football, but also with a focus on our own academy.” This season, after the Conference League, the team is in the intermediate round against Rapid Vienna. Vitesse last made it into the Europa League in the 2017/18 season.
At the club from Arnhem, head coach Thomas Letsch (assistant coach Jan Fießer) and scouting manager Daniel Ebbert have other Germans in managerial positions in the sporting field. Schmedes-Vorhanger Spors had left the club in December for Genoa CFC. He has been responsible for putting together the current Eredivisie sixth since April 2020. Schmedes meanwhile, according to CEO Pascal van Wijk, “stands for a strong vision, a modern and innovative approach and a focus on the short and long term. He has a wide network, knows the Dutch market well and is committed to training and developing talent.”
