Mother’s Day: when it is celebrated in Italy and in the world

Mother’s Day: the origins

The origins of this festival date back to 1870. Talking about it for the first time, in May of that year, was Julia Ward Howe, peace activist and abolitionistwho proposed the establishment of the Mother’s Day for PeaceMother’s Day for Peace, as a moment of reflection against war.

From 1908 it began to spread around the world

However, the idea didn’t get a great response and, in fact, it was years later, in 1908, that the party began to spread when Anna Jarvis decided to celebrate the Mother’s Day (Mother’s Day) in honor of her mum Ann, a peace activist.

The celebration became so popular to be formalized as a real national holiday by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914, on the second Sunday of May.

And when does Mother’s Day arrive in Italy?

The holiday was then introduced in 1917 in Switzerland, in 1918 in Finland, in 1919 in Norway and Sweden, in 1923 in Germany and in 1924 in Austria.

In Italy, the party as it is understood today, was born in the second half of the Fifties and, moreover, until 2000, the celebration was always celebrated on 8 May. Then, to align with the American calendar, Mother’s Day moved to the second Sunday in May.

In the world the Mother’s Day it falls on different dates according to the countries: for example, in the Balkan area, but also in Armenia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Burkina Faso, Vietnam falls on March 8or in conjunction with International Women’s Day.

In Arab countries the feast falls instead on the day of the spring equinox, on March 21st. In Spain, Portugal, Hungary and Lithuania the first Sunday of Maywhile in Norway it is already celebrated on the second Sunday of February and in Georgia on April 3rd.

In Argentina Mother’s Day comes only the third Sunday of October. Last to celebrate the Indonesians, on December 22nd.
