After the groundbreaking victory with Benfica, Roger Schmidt does not want to accept congratulations from the championship just yet.
“We still don’t have a hand on the title. There are still three games to go,” said the German coach after the important 1-0 win in the top game of the Portuguese soccer championship against SC Braga.
“The best thing was that we played like champions. We have to show that now on the home stretch of the championship. We’re in a very good position.”
With three games remaining, Benfica are currently seven points ahead of their closest pursuer, FC Porto. However, Porto are still playing on Monday and could then cut back to four points. But even if the defending champions win, Benfica will hardly be able to take their first championship title since 2019.
“I’m very proud of the players. We played a great game, it was fantastic,” said the 56-year-old Schmidt.
