‘This is really a bizarre couple’

Olcay Gulsen and Ruud de Wild have to deal with quite a few nasty sneers from Marcel van Roosmalen. He does not understand that they are getting a soap on NPO 1. “This is really a bizarre couple.”

Olcay Gulsen and Ruud de Wild are not exactly the most popular couple in the Netherlands. She because of her shady financial dealings – first with the bankruptcy of SuperTrash, last with the lost lawsuit over a loan from her mother-in-law – and he because he always stands up for misbehaving celebrities.

‘Unique!’

And now these two media figures are getting their own docusoap. On Videoland, which is full of ‘documentaries’ about C stars? No. Somewhere on RTL 5, if necessary on SBS 6? No. They were scheduled for NPO 3 and have now been moved to the main stage: NPO 1. ‘Olcay & Ruud’ will premiere there next Wednesday.

According to TV professor Tina Nijkamp, this is unique. “It is the first time in sixteen years that there will be a reality series on a large family channel about celebrities who are not singers,” she explains. “The only other time that a celebrity without a ‘fan base’ was central to a reality series was in 2007, when Wilma Nanninga had a series on RTL 4.”

She obviously does not count people who became celebrities through a reality series, such as the Meilandjes.

Bizarre couple

Marcel van Roosmalen is not waiting for this couple at all. He snorts into his podcast Another Day: “I think they are a bizarre couple. That Ruud de Wild too… I also hope that his idiotic art is portrayed properly. All those personal paintings in which he has incorporated numbers or letters.”

It is art of licking vests, Marcel thinks. “Do you think that Ruud himself finds his art really impressive? He makes it pretty quickly I think. Then he prints lyrics in it. Will he then stand at a distance from: yes, wow, said something again? Yes, I find it fascinating.”

Disaster area

The journey of Olcay and Ruud to the earthquake area in Turkey must also have been filmed, thinks Marcel. “I am most looking forward to their trip to Turkey, where they went to look at collapsing buildings and helped. Helping Ruud de Wild in a disaster area, I can’t see that often enough.”

He continues: “I assume that he is full and that he supports Olcay. What should she do in a disaster area? You do not know. Also watch. Something about clothes and that they will comfort people with the announcement that they will tell about it in the Netherlands.”

‘Camera horn’

Other critics also accuse Olcay and Ruud of being ‘camera horny’. “That soap they are going to do now… I don’t like those two,” said Johan Derksen recently in VI. “They are so very horny of themselves. That seems a bit annoying to me. But it can never get more annoying than that camping boss or the Meilandjes.”

That Turkey trip proves their media appetite, says Patrick Kicken. “As a celebrity you have to be so careful if it even remotely looks like you want to make a profit or hitch a ride, because then you’re screwed. Now these two have all appearances against and then this will get over it. Camera horny?”
