Magnet fisherman Sietse from Stiens fished a hand grenade out of the water at the Geuzenkade in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon together with two fellow magnet fishermen.
According to the Explosives Clearance Service of Defense (EOD), it is probably ‘an old hand grenade’. The explosive will be detonated in a safe place in the western port area, a spokesman said to NH News .
To wait
Sietse himself is sober when he tells in detail how he brought the specimen to the surface with two magnet fish mates. “My buddy saw that it was a Dutch grenade that was on edge. He knows about it.” The men immediately called 112, after which the Explosives Safety Team (TEV) came to inspect the grenade. They then switched on the EOD, for which the men had to wait three hours.
The explosive dated from after World War II, the police and the TEV concluded.
Saint Nicholas
Sietse Keimpe Keestra has been in the news more often because of his hobby. In 2018 he started his hobby magnet fishing and in 2021 he started his Facebook page Magnet fishing siest Leeuwarden . In the Leeuwarder Courant among other things, he told about how he started his hobby. In December last year he helped a deputy Sinterklaas to find his staff.
Keestra often goes magnet fishing in other cities. “It’s nice for a change. In Leeuwarden I am often alone on the road, in other cities I have more people around me.”
