Sailing yacht that wanted to sail to Russia stopped at Oudeschild due to sanctions

A sailing yacht registered in Russia was stopped by the coast guard on Monday when it sailed near Oudeschild. The eleven-meter yacht, worth around 120,000 euros, was not allowed to sail due to the sanctions against Russia.

The yacht caught the attention of the Coast Guard because it is registered in Russia. Customs was called in, which enforces the sanctions against Russia.

These sanctions include a ban on selling, supplying, transferring or exporting luxury goods to any person in Russia or for use in Russia. This also includes yachts with a value of 50,000 euros or more.

Return Russia

After an investigation by customs, it turned out that the crew wanted to sail the yacht to Russia at the owner’s request. The ship had been anchored in IJmuiden since 2019, because it could not sail away due to, among other things, a broken mast. Now that the repairs have been completed, the yacht was supposed to return to Russia.

Under the supervision of the coastguard, the ship sailed to the ports of IJmuiden. Under the direction of the Public Prosecution Service, Customs is conducting an investigation into the ship and all parties involved.
