Tesla sells record number of cars in first months of 2023 | Car companies

Tesla sold a record number of electric cars in the past quarter. However, compared to the last quarter of 2022, the increase was modest, despite the significant price reductions at the beginning of this year.

In total, Tesla sold nearly 423,000 cars from January through March, an increase of 36 percent year over year. Compared to the last quarter of last year, the number of vehicles sold increased by 4 percent. In particular, the Model 3 and the Model Y were more popular compared to the last months of 2022. Sales of these types increased by 6 percent. Sales of the more expensive Tesla models, the Model X and Model S, fell by 38 percent.

Tesla slashed prices for its cars worldwide by 20 percent in January. That was the result of missing the sales target for 2022. In that year, the company sold 1.3 million cars. Due to the price reduction, for example, the Tesla Model Y fell in price from $ 65,990 to $ 54,990, which is almost 51,000 euros.

2 million

Tesla has recently ramped up production of its cars, including at new factories in Texas and near Berlin. Production is also picking up in China, an important sales market for electric cars, after the release of strict corona measures. Total production in the first quarter of this year amounted to almost 441,000 cars.

CEO Elon Musk expects to sell 2 million cars this year, he said at the beginning of this year. That is 52 percent more than last year. It is not yet known how much income the car sales have generated. Tesla will publish first-quarter financial results later this month.
