Top US soldier Mark Milley does not think Ukraine will win this year’s war. Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky wants to expel all Russian soldiers from the country and that will be very difficult, the army chief of staff said in an interview with news site Defense One.
According to Milley, there are hundreds of thousands of Russians in the occupied territories. Of Zelensky’s goal, he says it is “not impossible” to achieve. “I’m just saying it’s a very difficult task.” Kiev sees the departure of the Russian army as a precondition for peace. A ceasefire is considered unacceptable, as Russia will still have control over parts of Ukraine.
The United States is one of Ukraine’s most important allies in the more than year-long battle against Russia. The Americans provide billions in aid. According to Milley, there are no plans to send long-range ATACMS missiles. “We have relatively little of it ourselves and we have to make sure we maintain our own ammunition stocks.”

Meanwhile, the British Ministry of Defense states in a daily update on the conflict that the Russian winter offensive is failing. London this time focuses on General Valeri Gerasimov, the commander-in-chief who personally took command of operations in Ukraine in January. His command is marked by efforts to launch a general winter offensive. That offensive should extend Russian control to the entire Donbas region. “After 80 days, it is becoming increasingly clear that this project has failed.”
Only very limited gains have been made on various axes of the front, at the cost of tens of thousands of casualties, according to London. The temporary advantage in numbers after Russia’s partial mobilization in the autumn would thus have been “largely squandered”.
Moscow dismisses the daily intelligence update that the British Ministry of Defense distributes via Twitter as disinformation.
