Today was a revolutionary Sunday for the political world in Argentina thanks to the message from Mauricio Macri in which he announced that he will not be a candidate for President. What was the impact on social media?

At 10:00 in the morning, Macri published a video of just over 6 minutes on all his social networks in which he assured: “I want to ratify the decision that I will not be a candidate in the next election. And I say this convinced that we must enlarge the political space for the change that we are initiating and that we have to inspire others with our actions”. The digital detail: on Twitter he directly published the YouTube link without any message (the preview didn’t even come out); Neither did the video without a copy on Instagram and on Facebook, in addition to the video, it added: “03-26-23”. But let’s take a little look at your message metrics.

On Twitter, up to the time of writing this article, the tweet had 512,000 views, 1,585 retweets, 910 citations and 5,255 likes. On Instagram, the video publication already has almost 250,000 views, more than 40,000 likes and 6,200 comments. On Facebook, 21,000 reproductions, more than 5,000 likes, 2,200 comments and 5,000 shares. Finally, on YouTube, two hours after its publication, the video accumulated more than 5,700 views and more than 600 comments.

The announcement generated that, this Sunday, “Mauricio Macri” is the first trend in Argentina with more than 13,000 tweets, “Patricia” second trend, “President” third and “Larreta” fourth trend. In addition, 28 minutes after the message, “Mauricio Macri” was also the most searched on Google with the 100 index indicating the maximum popularity of the term.

How did some political leaders react to the former president’s decision? Patricia Bullrich was the first to publish, just a minute after Mauricio Macri’s tweet came out: “Mauricio Macri’s historic decision confirms his greatness and generosity. Even being able to become president again, he has prioritized the interests of our country before his own, as very few leaders have done in Argentine history ”. Will Macri have anticipated his decision to Bullrich?

María Eugenia Vidal took 47 minutes to express herself: “I couldn’t be more proud to team up with leaders who put speculation aside and always put Argentines first. Thank you @mauriciomacri for showing us the way and for showing that there are millions of us who know that our country can be changed”. Almost the same time it took Horacio Rodríguez Larreta who published a thread of tweets that began with the following message: “Once again and as he has done throughout his life, Mauricio Macri makes a decision that makes clear his enormous vision, his generosity, courage and love for Argentines.”

Others who expressed themselves were, for example, Gerardo Morales: “We welcome the announcement by @mauriciomacri, it is a good decision that helps the Collective of @juntoscambioar. Reaffirming our unity is the way to turn Argentina around”. Alfredo Cornejo, for his part, assured: “The difficult situation that our country is going through can be resolved by working together and without pettiness. It is the path that Together for Change took. We are a team that is prepared for the upcoming challenges”. Martin Lousteau posted: “The Argentines ask us to put our differences aside and to be more together than ever. I celebrate the decision of @mauriciomacri, a great gesture that seeks to strengthen the unity of @juntoscambioar and supports the new leadership within the space”.

For now, the only response from the ruling party came from spokesperson Gabriela Cerruti, who decided to respond to a fragment of the video in which Macri refers to the fact that Argentina is isolated from the world. Then, Cerruti published a tweet with photos of President Alberto Fernández at international summits, with Lula Da Silva, from Brazil, and Emmanuel Macron, from France. She and she added the text “Isolated from the world”, accompanied by an emoji.

Finally, a particularity: shortly after Macri reaffirmed his decision not to be a candidate in the next presidential elections, Javier Milei made a curious tweet that said “VIVA LA LIBERTAD CARAJO” with the image of a flag in the air with the description “Milee 2023”.
