Peter Urban can still laugh after 25 editions of the ESC this year

Peter Urban has announced that he will be retiring after this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The 74-year-old has been moderating the music competition for German television since 1997 and only missed one event due to illness.
“I’m turning 75, it’s the 25th ESC and it’s a perfect time to stop. And at some point it should have been anyway,” the journalist explained his decision to the dpa. After retiring as an editor in 2013, he remained an ESC commentator and freelancer at NDR. “I hope that my comments have helped to keep interest in this fascinating, unique event unrivaled in the world, even in the years with weaker German results. Thank you for the trust and loyalty over many years, it was an honor and a great pleasure!” adopted he himself. However, it is still unclear who will follow in his big footsteps.
This year’s edition takes place in Liverpool on May 13th. Ukraine would have been the host as last year’s winner, but due to the ongoing war, the event was postponed to Great Britain. For Germany, the metal band Lord of the Lost is at the start with “Blood and Glitter”.
