Technical manager Gerry Hamstra on his way to exit at Ajax | Dutch football

Gerry Hamstra and Ajax will be separating in the short term. The 52-year-old technical manager is in talks with the club to terminate his contract until mid-2024 and thus makes also room for Julian Wardwhich will be presented soon.

Hamstra has been employed by Ajax for about two years. After leaving Heerenveen, he started working in Amsterdam as a technical manager, a role that was created to relieve director Marc Overmars of contract matters involving the highest youth teams.

When the latter left last year as a result of unacceptable behavior, Hamstra was given more responsibility. Together with general manager Edwin van der Sar and the new Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, he had to maintain Ajax’s status of ruler in the Netherlands and stunt team in Europe with a successful trainer change and transformation of the selection.

For the succession of the successful Ten Hag, the trio approached Alfred Schreuder (with whom Hamstra had not yet worked together), only to return after six months. fire. In addition, Van der Sar, Hamstra and Huntelaar sold more than 200 million to players and they outsourced half of that. But despite those substantial investments, the national champion in the Eredivisie is six points behind Feyenoord and Ajax did not survive a round in the Champions League and Europa League.

Ajax is now, after almost fifteen months, about to appoint a permanent successor for Overmars. With Ward, who comes over from Liverpool, negotiations are in the final stages. Hamstra, who is making way for the Englishman, wants to work outside Amsterdam next season. De Fries, who previously worked for Vitesse and Emmen, had not heard from the club management about his future for a long time and also lacked appreciation for his work in the turbulent 2022 calendar year.
