Just like in the summer fairy tale of 2006, football fans will be able to celebrate together on large pitches at the European Championships in 15 months.

“17 major events such as fan villages and public viewings are currently being planned in ten cities. And we’re not finished yet,” said tournament director Philipp Lahm. At the “Sustainability Dialogue Forum” with more than 200 guests, the 2014 world champion and association vice president Celia Sasic gave an update on the current status of the preparations on the DFB campus.

“The close exchange with the host cities is crucial right now, because many questions are decided there,” said Lahm. This also applies to the desired ecological sustainability, for example in the form of climate-friendly mobility to the arenas.

Sustainability in focus

“Sustainability has not only arrived as an issue, sustainability is the focus of what we do today,” emphasized DFB President Bernd Neuendorf. The German Football Association presented its “Gutes Spiel” sustainability strategy, which Neuendorf rated as “one of the more important executive committee decisions”.

The DFB also announced that thousands of people of all ages had already applied to volunteer for the EM, but that a total of 16,000 volunteers were needed. The application platform will open on June 14 – exactly 100 days before the start of the tournament.
