“Had the opportunity to change”
16 contracts at Borussia Dortmund end by the summer of 2023, one of which belongs to left-back Raphaël Guerreiro (28), who is still tied to the black and yellow for a year and a half. While there are indications of a change in the defensive center after the transfer of Niklas Süle (26), since Dan-Axel Zagadou (22; until 2022), Manuel Akanji (26; 2023) and Mats Hummels (33; 2023) have working papers that differ nearing the end, the Portuguese is ready for negotiations.
“The authorities and I will speak to each other in due course. That hasn’t happened yet. There were only loose talks, but nothing concrete yet. I would definitely be ready because I feel very comfortable here,” said the Portuguese in an interview with “Sport1”. In 2016, the left-footer, who was born in France, switched from FC Lorient to Dortmund for 12 million euros and has since been part of the starting line-up if he was not slowed down by injuries.
Guerreiro confirmed that he “also had the opportunity to transfer in the past” but ultimately decided against it. Among other things, there was an offer from Paris Saint-Germain that was ready to be signed in the summer of 2019: “But I like stability. If I feel comfortable in a club, and that’s absolutely the case at BVB, then I’m happy to stay. In my opinion, Dortmund is a big club. I have an important role here and I’m a regular. At a new club I would have to prove myself all over again. When I’m not playing, I don’t feel good. I feel at home at BVB. Of course, if another big club comes, I’ll think about it. But I currently see my future in Dortmund and not somewhere else.”

Guerreiro at BVB among record foreigners: “I love this club very much”
With 177 appearances, Guerreiro is already one of the foreigners with the most games for BVB. In 14th place, it can still be in the top 10 this season. Tomas Rosicky currently holds that position with 189 games, with Robert Lewandowski just behind with 187 games. However, a long-term contract extension should no longer be enough for first place: Dedê had a total of 13 years for his 398 appearances.
“I love this club very much, everyone knows that,” stresses Guerreiro, but also points out that at the age of 28, large sums will probably be negotiated for the last time. Despite consistently strong performances, he is not one of the top earners at BVB around Hummels (10 million) and Marco Reus (32; 12 million). “We have to come to an agreement in the end. The new contract will of course be important for me, and I won’t sign that many again. So everything has to fit. I now want to focus on the rest of the games this season. I see no rush. My contract situation is not a priority,” said the full-back.
