Cristiano Ronaldo dominates
João Mário (30) continued his impressive run at Benfica in the stunning 5-1 win over Club Brugge in the second leg of the round of 16, scoring in his fifth consecutive Champions League game – four of them from penalties. Since the competition was launched in 1992, only twelve players have had a longer goal streak, one of which has been running since September 13, 2022: Mohamed Salah (30) scored eight goals in six games for Liverpool FC.

As early as next Wednesday (9 p.m.), the Egyptian could extend his run in the round of 16 second leg at Real Madrid and move up from ninth to sixth or seventh place. The 31 five-goal streak could also be joined in the tie by Salah’s team-mate Darwin Núñez (23), who has also been successful in his last four Champions League games.
The top 15 of the longest goal series in the Champions League is once again dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo (38), who is the only player to be represented three times – also at the top. From the 2017 final to the 2018 quarter-final second leg, the Portuguese scored 17 goals in 11 games for Real Madrid. Long-time rival Lionel Messi (35) only scored five goals in a row for FC Barcelona three times.
Haller’s starting record among the longest goalscoring streaks in the Champions League
Another record was set in 2021/22 by Sébastien Haller (28), who was sixth. In the dress of Ajax Amsterdam, the Ivorian scored eleven times in seven “premier class” games in a row – these were his first seven games ever in the Champions League. Before him, Alessandro Del Piero (1995), Diego Costa (2013/14) and Erling Haaland (2019) held the record, who could always score in their first five appearances. The latter also made it into the top 15 of the longest goal streaks in the Champions League in 2020/21 in the service of BVB.
