After 23 unsuccessful attempts, Serie A promoted US Cremonese have won a league game for the first time this season. On Tuesday evening, the Lombards triumphed 2-1 in front of their home crowd against Champions League contenders AS Roma. Against the team of coach José Mourinho it was even the second win in four weeks. Earlier in the month, Cremonese had also beaten the capitals 2-1 in the Coppa Italia quarter-finals.
On Tuesday, Frank Tsadjout put the Grigiorossi ahead with a dream goal (17′). European champion Leonardo Spinazzola only managed to equalize for the favorites from Rome in the 71st minute, but the 37-year-old striker Daniel Ciofani marked the final score with a penalty twelve minutes later. Roma coach Mourinho did not experience the late goals from the bench – shortly after the restart, the Portuguese was sent off by referee Marco Piccinini with a red card after vehement protests.
With the win, Cremonese escapes the unflattering title as the sole Serie A team with the longest cross-season winning streak in history. Including the club’s last Premier League season in 1995/96, USC had gone 30 league games without winning a triple point. This also applies to US Ancona between May 1993 and April 2004.
