In defence, Thiago Silva and Reece James have replaced Benoît Badiashile and Azpilicueta. The Spaniard received an unfortunate kick in the face from Sékou Mata against Southampton and has been treated in hospital but is now doing better. In midfield, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovačić will be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Raheem Sterling. But even at Chelsea there is unrest off the field. During the week, ex-Chelsea striker Timo Werner took on former London coach Thomas Tuchel and lamented a lack of appreciation in his second year with the Londoners. Tuchel preferred newcomer Romelu Lukaku because of his fee and did not take into account Werner’s performance in his first months at Chelsea. Werner is now playing again in Leipzig and Chelsea signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, among others, but he didn’t really hit the capital. After 17 games and only three goals, there is speculation that the Gabonese will soon leave for the MLS.

While Tottenham can move up into the top three with a possible win against Chelsea and underline their Champions League ambitions, the visitors must be careful not to lose touch with the international ranks entirely. Before the match day, they are a whopping ten points behind Newcastle, who are fifth in the Europa League. Chelsea have been without a win in four Premier League games, having only scored their own goal in the 1-1 draw at West Ham two weeks ago. Despite a good performance in the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund lost 1-0 in the round of 16 and the Blues were eliminated early on in the cup competitions. It is therefore important to turn things around quickly.

Another bad news came from Spurs coach Antonio Conte during the week. The Italian underwent gallbladder surgery in early February and his comeback to the coaching bench has now been delayed. “Out of a sense of responsibility towards the club, the pros and the tifosi, I hastened my return. Unfortunately, I underestimated the surgery, which was not routine,” Conte wrote on Instagram: “My body suffered and now I have to go to my full Pause recovery. Anyone who knows me knows how much this pains me, but now this pause is necessary. Come on you Spurs.”

The Spurs have clinched a win again after two defeats in the league – in the league at Leicester City (1-4) and in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against AC Milan (0-1). Emerson Royal put Tottenham on the road to victory and Joker Heung-Min Son bagged the win. After the game, Tottenham publicized racial slurs on social media against the South Korean during the Hammers game and announced they would take sharp action. It is the second such incident in the Premier League in a short period of time, following similar incidents involving Brentford striker Ivan Toney.
