Feyenoord will compete against Shakhtar Donetsk in the eighth finals of the Europa League. The Rotterdammers are therefore opposite the number two in Ukraine. Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United can prepare for a diptych with Real Betis.
Shakhtar narrowly survived the intermediate round of the Europa League. The Ukrainian top club went down against Stade Rennes (2-1) last night, so that penalties had to decide. Shakhtar, where former Ajax striker Lassina Traoré is under contract, was the happiest. A diptych with Feyenoord awaits in the eighth finals.
Shakhtar is currently second in the Ukrainian league, five points behind leaders Dnipro-1. The thirteen-time national champion, who cannot play in his own stadium due to the war with Russia, won the UEFA Cup in 2009.
Manchester United
Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United, which won 2-1 against FC Barcelona yesterday, will take on Real Betis. The Spanish sub-topper is fifth in La Liga and became group winner in the Europa League at the end of last year, so it did not have to take action this week, just like Feyenoord. Ajax executioner Union Berlin was linked to Union Saint-Gilloise during the draw in Nyon. Sevilla, who eliminated PSV, will play against Fenerbahce.
In view of the coefficient ranking, Sporting Portugal is also good to keep an eye on. The team of Jeremiah St. Juste takes on the English leader Arsenal and has to work to extend the European adventure. Elimination would mean good news for the Netherlands, which is competing with Portugal for two tickets for the Champions League.
Feyenoord will at least play without away fans in the eighth finals. The team from Rotterdam received that punishment from UEFA after disorder in the stands. The Noordzijde must also remain closed during the home game in De Kuip. The eighth finals will be played on Thursday 9 and Thursday 16 March.
