Smith was appointed last November to take over two investigations involving Trump. The first investigation involves keeping classified documents at his Florida residence after Trump left the White House. The second investigation examines attempts to have the results of the 2020 presidential election declared invalid.
The special counsel may eventually decide to prosecute Trump. The former president wants to run for president again in 2024.
