The government gives 30 million to increase prosperity in South and East Drenthe

The South and East Drenthe region will receive 30 million euros from the government to increase prosperity in the area. The money comes from the fourth round of the so-called Region Deals.

Residents of South and East Drenthe have a lower average income, a less good starting position on the labor market, relatively more problems within the family and visit the doctor more often. The region is also ageing: some young people are leaving for their studies and will not return.

To address the issues, the region submitted a proposal for the Region Deals. In these deals, regional parties work together with the national government to increase prosperity. In the summer, Minister Hanke Bruins Slot (Interior and Kingdom Relations) invited the regions to come up with proposals for a new Region Deal.

With the financial injection of 30 million, South and East Drenthe – as well as South Rotterdam and the North Sea Port District – received the highest possible amount of this round. The other projects had to make do with lower government contributions.

“Our residents deserve a lasting investment, which we are committed to in the new Region Deal. And as long as we do this with passion and know who we are doing it for and for, we are and will remain one of the most beautiful regions in the Netherlands to live in. to live, work and where people take good care of each other”, says deputy Henk Jumelet.

A total of 23 proposals were submitted in the fourth round of the Region Deals, of which 14 proposals are being further elaborated. A fifth and sixth round will follow later, for which the cabinet has a total of 900 million euros available.
