Rebecca Miller’s romantic comedy stars Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei and Anne Hathaway. The film still has room for improvement, says BZ Kultur reporter Sebastian Bauer.
THE STORY: Opera composer Steven Lauddem (Peter Dinklage), married to the cleaning-addicted psychologist Patricia (Anne Hathaway), is in a creative crisis. On a walk he meets the passionate tug boat captain Katrina (Marisa Tomei). A one night stand with her gives him back his inspiration, but now he can’t get rid of her. Meanwhile, Steven’s 18-year-old son (Evan Ellison) has an argument with his 15-year-old girlfriend’s father, who plans to sue him for kidnapping.
THE STARS: Anne Hathaway has specialized in romantic comedy since Princess Diaries. Peter Dinklage is the hero of Game of Thrones.
THE DIRECTOR: Rebecca Miller already showed “Maggie’s Plan” at the Berlinale in 2016.
BEAR CHANCE: None, runs at “Berlinale Special Gala”.
BG RATING: Wants a lot, does little of it. Only a few nice ideas remain. According to the old Berlinale law, the more mediocre the opening film, the better the competition. That gives hope.
