DFB project manager Dr. Despite increased protests, Jochen Drees cannot imagine abolishing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the Bundesliga. It is “not a realistic demand to abolish it,” Drees told the pay TV broadcaster “Sky”. “Internationally, more and more leagues are using the VAR. There will no longer be a tournament at international level without VAR.”
After the last match day, there was severe criticism in several stadiums. The DFB video evidence chief now said: “We have far fewer wrong decisions by the VAR. Nevertheless, the expectation that we will no longer make mistakes cannot be met. The VAR is an instrument that is operated by people.” There will “never be a hundred percent hit rate”.
At the same time, Drees sees potential for increasing the VAR assignment in Germany and criticized some referees. “We must (…) also improve the decision-making quality of the referees. We weren’t at all satisfied with that in the first half of the season,” said the responsible project manager. It was “better in the second half of the season, but we also see cases where the courage to actively make a decision is missing.”
